England outlines first phase of GP domestic-abuse support programme
The Department of Health and Social Care says 12 areas will receive up to £34.4 million over three years for Steps to Safety referral services.
What the record says
The October 23 announcement describes training for general-practice staff to recognize domestic abuse and sexual violence, and links with independent specialist support workers. Patients at participating practices may discuss current or past experiences and be referred with their agreement. Twelve integrated care boards were selected in September for phase one, with national provision targeted for 2029.

Practical next step
Patients can check whether their GP practice participates and ask about available specialist support.
Limits and what is not established
The programme is being introduced in phases and is not yet available through every practice in England. The 2029 date is a national rollout goal, not evidence of current nationwide coverage.
