WHO reports imported Bundibugyo case in Kenya; global risk remains low
WHO’s October 8 update describes an imported case in Kenya and an expanding outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while retaining its low global risk assessment.
What the record says
WHO says Kenya reported its first laboratory-confirmed imported Bundibugyo virus disease case after travel from the Democratic Republic of the Congo through Uganda. The patient died on October 5, and contact tracing was underway. The October 8 report lists 8,728 confirmed cases and 4,205 confirmed deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as of October 6. WHO assessed risk as very high in that country, high in countries sharing its land borders, and low globally and elsewhere in the African region. A Kenya-specific rapid assessment was ongoing. A healthcare worker evacuated to the Netherlands was receiving treatment; WHO does not count that evacuation as a locally acquired Netherlands case.
WHO does not recommend blanket travel or trade restrictions in this notice.

Practical next step
People traveling to or working in affected areas should consult current official public-health and destination advice. WHO’s notice emphasizes avoiding direct contact with infected bodily fluids and contaminated materials and prompt recognition and care for illness.
Limits and what is not established
These figures and assessments are dated. WHO advises against travel or trade restrictions, but that recommendation is separate from restrictions imposed by individual governments. CDC’s October 8 page describes U.S. entry restrictions and screening for specified travel histories; consult current official instructions for your itinerary. An imported case or medical evacuation does not establish widespread transmission in the receiving country. CDC reports no U.S. cases associated with this outbreak as of its update.
